McLennan's Johnson earns ABCA award

New McLennan Baseball head coach Tyler Johnson has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) 2022 NJCAA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year.

Last season, Johnson helped guide the Highlanders to the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Championship with a record of 28-4. The team went on to claim the Region V Championship and earn the program's second consecutive trip to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Highlanders finished the season with an overall record of 50-13-1 with players claiming numerous honors including nine all-conference honorees, an ABCA All-American, two NJCAA All-Americans, an MLB Draft pick, and 17 NJCAA All-Academic honorees.

The ABCA began honoring a National Assistant Coach of the Year annually in 1999. Coaching expertise, recruiting, loyalty to the program and respect for the players and the game are some of the many criteria examined when reviewing the candidates for the award. Assistant Coach of the Year honorees are voted on and selected by the ABCA All-America and Coach of the Year committees, in conjunction with the ABCA national office.

Johnson, along with the 10 other high school and college award winners, will be recognized at the 79th-annual ABCA Convention in Nashville on Jan. 6, 2023.
