Highlassies, Highlander top Southwestern Christian

The McLennan Highlassies moved one step closer to a regional tournament berth with a 67-49 win over the Southwestern Christian Lady Rams.

McLennan built a six-point lead, 15-9, with 11:57 remaining in the first half. Southwestern Christian rallied, cutting the lead to one with 7:04 on the clock, 20-19. The Highlassies ended the half on a 17-2 run to break the game open and take the 37-21 advantage at the break.

The Highlassies continued to pull away in the second half as they cruised to the easy victory.

Kendra Wynn led McLennan with 17 points. Caylinne Martin and Re'Elle Miller added 13 and 10, respectively.

In men's action, the Highlanders squeaked by the Rams 83-79.

The teams kept it close through the first seven minutes of play with McLennan leading 17-16. Southwestern Christian began to pull away and took the first double-digit lead at 30-20 with 8:54 to go. Southwestern Christian led 47-30 with 2:55 remaining in the first half. The Highlanders ended the half on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to nine at the break, 49-40.

McLennan opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to two. The Rams extended the lead to 11, 60-49, with 16:12 remaining in the game. The Highlanders rallied again, cutting the lead to one with just over six minutes to play, 68-67. A James Harrison 3-pointer from the corner with 5:49 to go gave McLennan its first lead of the second half, 70-68. The game was tied at 79 with 47 seconds to play. The Highlanders' Alex Mills drained two free throws with 16 seconds on the clock to take the 81-79 lead. Jalen Jones made two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Mills led the Highlanders with 19 points and Jalen Jones added 18. Ricardo Artis recorded the double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Harrison scored 17 points.

McLennan returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Weatherford. The women's game will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
