The McLennan Highlassies fell to the Angelina Roadrunners 64-45 on the opening day of the MCC Classic at The Highlands.
Angelina opened the game on a 4-0 run. A bucket from the Highlassies' Demetrius Lewis and a pair of Mersadez Nephew free throws to tie the game at four with 5:43 to play in the first half. The Lady Roadrunners took the lead on a drive in the lane by Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim but a nothing-but-net 3-pointer by Valisa Millhouse from the elbow gave McLennan the 7-6 advantage with 4:45 to go in the first quarter. Angelina ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take the 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Roadrunners extended their run into the second, opening with a 5-0 run to push the lead to 13. McLennan chipped away at the lead midway through the quarter, cutting it to seven at 21-14. Angelina pulled away again and led by 12 at the break, 29-17.
McLennan opened the second half with a Mariona Garcia basket but Angelina continued to push the lead, leading by as many as 19 in the third. The Highlassies pulled within 12 multiple times in the final period but that would prove to be as close as they could get.
Demetrius Lewis led the Highlassies with 12 points and Mersadez Nephew added 10.
