Highlanders & Coyotes split series
The #18 McLennan Highlanders and #2 Weatherford Coyotes split today's conference doubleheader, resulting in a split of the four-game conference series.
Weatherford took the opener 7-4 with Kadyn Leon taking the loss on the mound for McLennan.
The Highlanders scored one in the second as Daniel Harden doubled, stole third and scored on a sac fly by Deiten Lachance.
The Coyotes took the lead with two runs in the third. Mason Ashlock walked and Cayden Byrd doubled. Ashlock scored on a ground out by JC Davis, and Byrd scored on a double by Blake Martinez.
McLennan went back on top with two runs in the bottom of the inning. McCloud walked and Sherman Johnson singled. Spencer Butt was hit by the pitch, loading the bases. Marcus Smith walked to score McCloud, and Johnson scored on a fielder's choice by Harden.
Weatherford took the lead again with two runs in the fourth as Jake Overstreet walked and scored on Caden Mitchell's home run.
The Highlanders tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Owen Egan led off with a single and stole his way around to third before scoring on an error.
The Coyotes scored two in the sixth to take the lead for good. Mitchell singled and Ashlock walked. Both runners advanced on a fly out by Byrd. Mitchell scored on a passed ball, and Ashlock scored on a single by Davis.
Weatherford rounded out the scoring with a run in the seventh. Manuel Salas singled, sole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Overstreet. Mitchell walked and Ashlock was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Salas then scored on the Uriah Walters walk.
In the night cap, the Highlanders got the 10-2 run-rule victory with Gage Goldman picking up the win.
McLennan took the early lead with three runs in the first. Johnson walked and Smith singled. Both runners advanced on the steal. Johnson scored on a single by Harden, and Smith scored on an error. Lachance doubled, and Harden scored on a ground out by Egan.
Weatherford cut the lead to one with two runs in the top of the fourth. Martinez singled and Trace Mazon doubled. Salas followed with a single to score Martinez and Mazon.
The Highlanders responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. McCloud singled and scored on an Abdiel Hernandez-Sostre home run. Johnson and Smith hit solo home runs. Harden was hit by the pitch, and Lachance followed with a two-run homer.
McLennan secured the run rule win a run in the bottom of the seventh. McCloud drew a lead-off walk but was caught stealing. AJ Goytia also walked and came around to scored on three wild pitches to end the game.
