The McLennan Highlanders and Vernon Chaparrals split this afternoon's baseball doubleheader in Vernon.
Vernon needed an extra inning to defeat McLennan 4-3 in the opener. Cade Waibel took the loss on the mound.
The Highlanders scored one in the first as Sherman Johnson doubled and scored on a single by Spencer Butt.
The Chaparrals took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Maisonet led off with a solo home run. Cooper Thomas and Anthony Talpa both singled. Joey Duran's fielder's choice put Thomas out at third. Jorge Olivera-Gutierrez then double to score Talpa.
Vernon added a run with Duran's home run in the third.
McLennan tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Johnson singled, advanced to third on a ground out by Butt. Marcus Smith singled score Johnson. Smith advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fielder's choice by Deiten Lachance. McClane Helton walked to load the bases. Smith then scored on a balk.
Catcher Ridings gave the Chaparrals the win with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Game two was all McLennan with the Highlanders getting the 7-0 shut-out victory. John Carmichael picked up the win on the mound.
The first Highlander run came in the top of the fourth as Burr singled, advanced on a ground out by Daniel Harden and scored on a single by Lachance.
McLennan added five runs in the sixth. Harden singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lachance and Helton both walked. AJ Goytia reached on an error, scoring Harden. Cage McCloud followed with a grand slam!
The final Highlander run scored in the seventh as Helton walked and scored on a double by Goytia.
