Highlanders fall to New Mexico
The No. 6 McLennan Highlanders fell to the New Mexico Thunderbirds 6-4 in tonight's season opener at Bosque River Ballpark.
New Mexico scored one in the top of the second. Roman Trinidad singled and Talan Barraza drew a walk. Trinidad scored on a fielder's choice by Mekhi Brewer.
McLennan tied the game with Cooper McEnroe's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second.
The Thunderbirds took the lead again with a run in the third. Jeter Battles reached safely and advanced to second on an error. Javier Diaz also reached on an error, scoring Battles.
The Highlanders tied the game again with a run in the bottom of the third. Brandon Dickinson doubled and advanced on a sac bunt by Bryce Hampton. Brannon Seigler then singled to score Dickinson.
A Diaz home run in the top of the fifth put New Mexico back on top.
McLennan took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dickinson led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Hampton. Peyton Firgens, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Seigler walked and was caught stealing, allowing Firgens to score.
The Thunderbirds scored one in the sixth to tie the game again as Trinidad singled and scored on a double by Barraza.
Two more New Mexico runs in the eighth sealed the win. Barraza singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Brewer reached on an error. Jesus Mejias singled to score Barraza. Diaz walked, loading the bases. Callan Warren was then hit by the pitch, scoring Brewer.
