Highlanders dominate Chaparrals
The No. 6 McLennan Highlanders swept today's home doubleheader against the Vernon Chaparrals.
McLennan picked up the 14-1 run-rule victory over Vernon in the opener with Stevie Doty getting the win on the mound.
The Highlanders took command with four runs in the first. Brennon Seigler hit a solo home run. Tyler Ness singled, and Cooper McEnroe and Sam Jenkins drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Brody Chyr doubled to score Ness and McEnroe, and Jenkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Dickinson.
Two more McLennan runs scored in the second. Ramon Corona led off with a double and scored on a triple by Peyton Firgens. Firgens then scored on a sac fly by Seigler.
Six Highlander runs crossed in the third. Chyr walked and advanced on a passed ball. Dickinson singled and Chyr scored on an error. Brock Lulewicz walked and both runners stole a base. Dickinson scored on a wild pitch, and Corona doubled to score Lulewicz. Firgens singled, and Seigler reached on an error, scoring Corona. Firgens and Seigler then stole a base each and scored on a single by Ness.
Vernon's only run came in the top of the fourth inning. Jacob Wehba double and advanced on a ground out by Rex Rambo. Benito Bonilla then singled to score Wehba.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dickinson and Brady Quinn were both hit by the pitch. Corona followed with a single to score Dickinson. Miles Ghossein walked, loading the bases, and Abdiel Hernandez Sostre walked to score Quinn.
Highlander dominance continued into the second game with the squad getting a 16-2 run-rule victory with Gino Zagorac on the mound.
McLennan scored two in the first. Firgens singled and Seigler walked, both advancing on a wild pitch. Firgens scored on a sac fly by Ness, and McEnroe walked. Seigler then scored when McEnroe got caught in a run down.
The Chaparrals got on the board with a run in the top of the second. Rambo and Shelton both singled. Michael Russell then singled to score Rambo.
The Highlanders added a run in the second. Quinn, Hayden Crites and Firgens all walked. Quinn then scored on a fielder's choice by Seigler.
Vernon's final run came in the top of the third inning. Irvin Leonard led off with a double and advanced to third on a ground out by Lusk. Jack LaRose followed with a sac fly to score Leonard.
McLennan responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. McEnroe walked and Jenkins was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and McEnroe scored on a ground out by Chyr. Quinn singled to score Jenkins, and Crites walked. Firgens singled loading the bases, and Seigler doubled to score all three runners. Ness walked, and McEnroe singled to score Seigler. Jenkins then singled to score Ness, and McEnroe scored on a double steal.
The Highlanders closed out the scoring with five runs in the fourth. Quinn singled and Crites doubled. Firgens singled to score Quinn. Seigler doubled, and Ness singled to score Firgens and Seigler. McEnroe followed with a triple, scoring Ness.
