Highlanders garner conference awards
The McLennan Highlanders were well represented in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference's Awards.
Head coach Kevin Gill was named the Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and 10th time in his McLennan career after leading the Highlanders to a perfect 14-0 record.
Sophomore guard Amare Banks was named the Player of the Year. The sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia, averaged 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Banks was also selected to the All-Conference and All-Region V teams.
Sophomore guard Avion Jackson from Humble, Texas, was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 6.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.9 steals per game. He was also named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference
Sophomore forward Joseph Mayberry III of Lancaster, Texas, was an All-Conference and All-Region V team selection. He averaged 11 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game.
Honorable mention went to Joe Burgess, Howard Gaskins Jr., Timi Ibikunle, Kardae Turner and Maximilian Blank. Burgess, a sophomore forward from Minneapolis, averaged 7.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Gaskins Jr., a sophomore guard from Baton Rouge, averaged 7.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Ibikunle, a freshman forward from Richmond, Texas, averaged 8.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Turner, a sophomore guard from Lancaster, Texas, averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 rebound and 2.5 assists. Blank, a sophomore forward from Nuremberg, Germany, averaged 3.8 points and 3.7 rebound per game.
