McLennan women trounce Texas A&M-San Antonio JV
The McLennan women's basketball squad trounced the Texas A&M-San Antonio Jaguars 107-72 tonight at The Highlands.
Texas A&M-San Antonio came out shooting opening with a bucket in the paint by Patience Grey followed by a 3-pointer from Kiani Riojas to give the Jaguars the early 5-0 lead. A bucket off the glass by Danai Lewis put McLennan on the board a minute into the contest. Texas A&M-San Antonio added another long ball to go up 8-2 with 8:45 to play in the first quarter. A 6-0 McLennan run including two baskets by Charnelle Hoof tied the game at eight. The teams traded baskets with the Jaguars leading 22-20 with three and a half minutes left in the period. A bucket by Tajenae Gooden tied the game and started a 10-0 McLennan run giving the squad an eight-point lead at 30-22 before the Jaguars trimmed it to five at the end of the quarter, 33-28.
The second quarter was all McLennan. The squad opened on a 6-0 run with baskets by Lewis, Shakira Brown and Gooden to go up 39-28. Grey added a jumper for the Jaguars but McLennan broke away with an 11-0 run. In all McLennan outscored Texas A&M-San Antonio 29-11 in the period to lead 62-39 at intermission.
In the third, the Jaguars once again started hot with a 5-2 run with baskets by Zara'nique Nealy and Rojas. McLennan responded with a 9-0 run to continue putting the game further out of reach. Charravia Smith and Trinity Butler accounted for the majority of the McLennan scoring as the team pushed to a 32-point lead heading into the fourth, 86-54.
The fourth quarter was much the same as McLennan rolled to the win.
Tajenae Gooden led McLennan with 22 points. Trinity Butler and Charnelle Hoof scored 16 points each. Danai Lewis added 10, and Charravia Smith and Lanaijha Johnson added 10 each.
