Highlanders fall in five-set match to Lee
A rowdy crowd was on hand for Friday's home opener in the inaugural season for McLennan Volleyball at The Highlands gym on the MCC campus as the Highlanders hosted the Lee Navigators. It was a hard-fought battle between the two squads with the Navigators stealing the 3-2 victory.
McLennan was in control early in the opening set, taking the opening serve and building a 3-0 lead. The Highlanders pushed the lead to four at 6-2 but Lee hung in, narrowing the gap to one at 8-7. McLennan began to pull away, slowly increasing the margin to take the set 25-16.
The Highlanders momentum carried into the second set when once again the squad rallied late to take it 25-13.
Lee and McLennan fed off each other for most of the third set and would be tied at 14. The Navigators took the lead and controlled the rest of the frame to avoid a sweep with a 25-20 win.
In the fourth, the teams would battle to a 16-16 tied before Lee once again pushed to a 25-20 victory to tie the match at two sets each.
It would be all Navigators early in the deciding set with the squad leading by five at the switch, 8-3. McLennan didn't back down, fighting to within two points at 12-10 but Lee took it in the end 15-10 to steal the match.
McLennan returns to conference play Saturday, hosting Vernon at 1 p.m.
