The McLennan Highlanders returned to conference play on Saturday, hosting the Vernon Chaparrals. McLennan took the opening set but Vernon took the next three to get the 3-1 victory.
Vernon had the opening serve but it was McLennan getting the first point after the Chaparrals were called for in the net. The Highlanders turned that opening point into a 4-1 run and held the lead until Vernon tied the game at 16. The teams traded points and would be tied at 20. The Highlanders pushed the lead to 23-20 and held on for the 25-21 win.
It was back-and-forth in the second set with the Chaparrals squeaking out the 25-23 win.
Set three was all Vernon with the 25-9 victory.
The Highlanders found their rhythm once again in game four and battled to trail by just two at 19-17 before the Chaparrals rallied to win the set and the match, 25-17.
McLennan returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Temple for a 6 p.m. conference match.
