Highlanders rally for reverse sweep of Coastal Bend
The McLennan Highlander Volleyball team bounced into the win column with a 3-2 victory over the Coastal Bend Cougars tonight at The Highlands.
Coastal Bend was in control in the opening set. The Cougars built an early four point-lead at 4-2 and extended the lead to eight at 15-7. The Highlanders trailed by seven at 17-9 before scoring four straight points to cut the lead to four, 17-13. Coastal Bend then pulled away to take the set 25-18.
The tide began to turn in the second set. McLennan took an early three-point lead before Coastal Bend tied it at five. It was back-and-forth through the remainder of the set with the Cougars edging out the Highlanders in the end 25-23.
McLennan took the momentum in the third set. The Highlanders opened on a 4-0 run and led by seven at 11-5. Coastal Bend couldn't muster a rally and McLennan won the set 25-15.
Set four would also go to the Highlanders. McLennan once again built an early three-point lead at 5-2. Coastal Bend tied the game at eight but the Highlanders charged forward, taking it 25-14 to force the deciding set.
Inf the final set, it looked like the Highlanders would run away with it early. McLennan led 5-1 when the Cougars called a timeout. Coastal Bend rallied to cut the lead to two a couple times but the Highlanders held off the rally and won it 15-10 to take the match.
McLennan hosts Temple for a conference match Saturday at 1 p.m.
